Overview
Giving discarded travertine a second life through adaptive and circular product design.
Emersio is a lighting system designed to valorize discarded travertine from the Tivoli–Guidonia stone district. Instead of reshaping waste into a new material, the project preserves each fragment in its original form, allowing its unique geometry to define the final product. A modular steel structure custom-made by Rapi Srl adapts to every stone, while discarded travertine collected from Pacifici's quarry and crafted by Grilli e Ceccarelli Marmi creates one-of-a-kind pieces that embrace circular design, repairability, and material authenticity.
Problem
Large quantities of travertine are discarded during extraction and processing due to irregular shapes or aesthetic imperfections, despite retaining excellent structural and visual qualities.
Solution
A modular and fully disassemblable lighting system that adapts to the geometry of each discarded stone, extending its life cycle without altering its identity and promoting repairability, longevity, and responsible material use.
